With an aim to provide better care for the patients suffering from head and neck cancer, the Hyderabad-based Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute has launched a rehabilitation clinic to cater to the needs of post operated cancer patients.

The ‘Head and Neck Rehabilitation Clinic’ is designed to cater exclusively to the needs of those patients who have undergone treatment for advanced head and neck cancer. Sometimes the patients may lose their entire tongue and larynx and may suffer from permanent disability of speech and may even face problems in swallowing. For such patients, there is a need to provide better treatment and also need to rehabilitate them so that they can cope-up themselves and adopt better to carry forward their day to day activities without any problems.

According to Dr. L. M Chandrasekhara Rao, Senior Head and Neck Oncologist, individuals who undergo treatment for advanced tongue cancer may sometimes lose their entire tongue and after which they suffer from permanent disability of speech and face problems in swallowing the food. Similarly, there are patients who may have undergone neck cancer operation and may have lost larynx (voice box) after which the patient cannot speak normally.

“Particularly the patients who undergo neck and tongue cancer operations they face lot of pain and difficulty in all facets of life and even may go into depression. To help improve the life conditions of such people we have designed an exclusive clinic to rehabilitate them,” said Dr. Chandrasekhara Rao.

In fact, for launching such a unique clinic, experts at the Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute have worked for more than two years. “During the past two years we have organised several meetings among the doctors and patients and met with individual patients who were operated to know their problems and issues. Based on their requirements and needs we have designed the new clinic to provide them better treatment and rehabilitate them,” informed the Senior Head and Neck oncology expert from the Indo-American Cancer Hospital.

Healthcare experts opined that the life of a patient becomes horrible once the tongue or larynx is removed. It is not that easy to cope up for a patient to get to normal. It needs lot of support from the family as well as the doctors. In fact it needs to be taken a special care of such patients until they adapt to their new disability and get confidence of living with the disability.

“Patients suffering from severe tongue and neck cancer as part of their treatment sometimes need to get their vital organs removed and it will cause lot of inconvinence post operation. To rehabilitate for such patients we have designed an exclusive clinic which will cater to such patients and help them rehabilitate,” said Balakrishna, Chairman of Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute.
